Register now for ScienceOnline

September 29th, 2008 by Andrea Novicki

open science logoRegister now for ScienceOnline!  This free, local, participatory conference will explore science on the web. The  goal is to bring together scientists, bloggers, educators, students, journalists and others to discuss, demonstrate and debate online strategies and tools for promoting the public understanding of science.

This conference is filled with great people, exciting ideas and inspiration.  In previous years, we learned about science communication, open access publishing, science careers and science blogging.  See (and contribute to) the tentative schedule for this year, see last year’s schedule, read my too-extensive notes from last year’s conference, or see other reports, pictures and video from last year.

See you there: January 16-18, 2009 at the Sigma Xi Center in Research Triangle Park.

Video journal gets respect

August 21st, 2008 by Lynne O'Brien

The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is now indexed in PubMed, the first video-journal to have that acceptance. “This is a major milestone for JoVE and also for new methods of science communication in general,” states the journal’s official blog.

JoVE is a peer reviewed, open access, online journal devoted to the publication of biological research in a video format. According to the journal’s website, it was established as a new open-access tool in life science publication and communication, with participation of scientists from leading research institutions. JoVE takes advantage of video technology to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of life science research.

Videos currently featured on the site range from “Proper Care and Cleaning of the Microscope” to “Paradigms for Pharmacological Characterization of C. elegans Synaptic Transmission Mutants.”

This news is especially interesting in light of the focus in this year’s Duke Digital Initiative on video as an enabling technology for teaching and learning.

Science Blogging Conference – not just science and not just blogging

January 22nd, 2008 by Andrea Novicki

Science Blog logoSome 200 science bloggers, scientists, journalists, educators and readers met on Saturday, January 19, 2008 for the second Science Blogging Conference organized by Bora Zivkovic and Anton Zuiker and held at Sigma Xi in Research Triangle Park, NC. Others participated online via streaming video (many courtesy of Wayne Sutton) and chat rooms.

The format was an “unconference”, where discussion, dissent and debate is crucial for each session; some sessions achieved this. As most of the attendees were bloggers, the sessions have been recorded in blogs, photos, video and audio. Below are descriptions of sessions with links to selected summaries.
