Faculty Toolbox: Collaborative Document Editing with Google Docs
Google Docs is a web-based word processing application, at its most basic level. Beyond that, Google Docs enables sharing and collaborating on documents on-line in real-time, with one person or a group at a time. As with other non-Duke, "Web 2.0" tools, we recommend using Google Docs with some precautions, but with that said, Google Docs can be a valuable resource for certain types of work.
"Faculty Toolbox" sessions combine the presentation of an application that might form part of a "faculty productivity toolbox" + discussion + lunch (or refreshments).
Attendees will be introduced at each session to one popular and useful tool or method which CIT feels might benefit faculty who are looking for approaches to help them organize information, collaborate on projects, or share materials with others. After a short presentation, we intend that the majority of the session will focus on discussion among the faculty attendees about perceived usefulness of the tool presented, relevance with regard to their current work patterns, and any questions they have about how to get started.

Faculty toolbox: Organizing and Sharing Web Links with Bookmarking Tools
If you're like us, you have hundreds of web links you have collected and want to keep track of. Browser-based bookmark collections allow only limited grouping, sorting and searching - web based collection tools such as Connotea or del.icio.us can serve you better, even if you prefer not to enable the "social" aspects of these bookmarking tools.

Faculty Toolbox: Let News Come to You with RSS
RSS (Really Simple Syndication feeds) is a simple method by which you can "sign up" and have certain information from sources you find relevant come to you, rather than you having to go searching for it on the Web. We'll briefly and non-technically explain what RSS is and how it works, demonstrate a typical "RSS reader" software, and discuss how RSS is useful as an information management approach.
