Faculty Course Use of Tablet PCs

The chart below describes instructor and student uses of DDI-funded tablets. In addition to the two Engineering faculty listed below, five other faculty in Engineering and Computer Science were also supported by CIT in their experimentation of tablet PCs in teaching through the Faculty IT Fellows program in 2006-07

Physical Chemistry Lab (Chem 167L). Fall 2006.
Todd Woerner and Ann Motten explored student uses of tablets in the lab and for scientific writing. As instructors they used the tablets for presentation with live annotation. They also used Classroom Presenter to do initial screening of student calculations and give feedback, and had students use the tablets to facilitate peer review and mark up of each others' writing.

Fundamentals of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE 27). Fall 2006, Spring 2007
In Fall 2006 Dr. Ybarra used Classroom Presenter to engage students in active learning exercises where they solved problems, submitted solutions, and then discussed each student's problem solving approach. In Spring 2007 Dr. Ybarra lectured every class period using a tablet and Ubiquitous Presenter.  Approximately every other class period he had activities for the students with 2 or 3 students per tablet where they worked on problems collaboratively.  They would also consult with each other on multiple choice or other types of questions.

Mechanical Design (ME141L ). Fall 2006, Spring 2007
Dr. Franzoni used the tablet to lecture with PowerPoint occasionally in Fall 2006 and for every lecture in Spring 2007. She used blank slides in powerpoint and wrote in color on the tablet. She would then save and distribute these electronic notes for download after her lectures. She also experimented with student use of tablets. She would give students 2-3 minutes to draw a diagram on the tablet PC and then submit their solutions anonymously using Ubiquitous Presenter. She would use these submissions to rapidly assess student understanding and determine what to spend more time covering in class.

Introduction to Film (Lit 110); Political Economy of the Global Image (Lit 117). Spring 2007.
Dr. Gaines explored the use of interactive presentations. She embedded clips and sound into 14 Powerpoint lectures to engage students in discussion and also sed the highlighter and 'Pen' features of the tablet for live annotation of pre-existing slide presentations.

Economic Principles (Econ 51D). Spring 2007
Dr. Fullenkamp used a tablet PC to present interactive lectures to a very large lecture class (400 seats).  The tablet facilitated his integration of rich media and data into his lectures, including spreadsheets, audio clips, and video clips.  He also captured annotated class notes from the tablet and posted these on Blackboard.

Intermediate Italian (Ital 63 .02 03). Spring 2007
Dr. Humber used Powerpoint presentations for interactive language exercises including fill-in the blank grammar, syntactical, and vocabulary exercises.  He also used the tablet during class to enable peer-editing activities of students' compositions and other written work. He also used the tablet as a convenient means for displaying cultural content and examples including video and images. In some cases, he passed the tablet around to enable students to see fine details of artwork and other high resolution images not visible in the projected images.

Intermediate Italian (Ital 63 .03 04). Spring 2007
Dr. Karagoz used the tablet for Powerpoint presentations including fill-in the blank grammar, syntactical, and vocabulary exercises.  The tablet also enabled peer-editing activities of students' compositions and other written work.

French Phonetics (French 107). Spring 2007
Dr. Tufts experimented with restructuring her students' phonetics annotation that she had previously done using the whiteboard. She experimented with having students use tablets to write international phonetic alphabet symbols and then transmit their annotations to Dr. Tufts who would select examples to display.
