In 2008-2009, the Duke Digital Initiative is continuing a pilot grant program launched in Fall 2007 to enable the audio or video recording of significant undergraduate classroom activities, lectures or academic events. The goal of our program is to develop models for creating this important type of educational content.

Support provided

Successful applicants will have their class activity or event professionally recorded and digitized for easy electronic distribution to members of their course, department, or to the broader university community.

Who can apply

Instructors on behalf of a course, department, program or other initiative related to undergraduate academic activities; students with a faculty sponsor for an undergraduate academic activity.

Scope of support

We will make a limited number of grants for this purpose in each semester. There is no firm deadline; applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis while resources are available.

Review criteria

To meet the goals of our program, we are especially interested in receiving the following:

(1) Applications that have significant pedagogical value for the activity in question. For courses, pedagogical value would be defined by the contribution to and fit with course goals and objectives. For other academic activities, pedagogical value would be defined by contribution to and fit with the academic goals & objectives of the sponsoring program or initiative.

2) Applications that present an opportunity to explore the technical and production requirements for audio and video recording in for a particular type of academic activity (e.g. guest lecture, student presentation, student or small group performance, etc) in different classroom settings or locations.

Grant requirements

All grant recipients will be asked to participate in an evaluation of the program, including an assessment of the value the recorded materials added to the course or academic community.
