Fellows 2003-2004 - Designing Online Courses for DEL - NSOE

Overview

The Duke Environmental Leadership Master of Environmental Management (DEL-MEM) Program is a two-year, 30-credit program designed for mid-career environmental and business executives with a minimum of five years experience. The DEL-MEM curriculum, taught through a combination of on campus and online work, focuses on interdisciplinary and global themes, strategic approaches to environmental management, communication and effective leadership. The Fellows in this program began the development of the curriculum for this distance-learning program for individuals pursuing an interdisciplinary graduate curriculum directed toward the Master of Environmental Management degree (MEM) and dedicated to the diverse needs of mid-career environmental professionals. The faculty members worked as a team on development of first set of modular courses for the Duke Environmental Leadership Program (DEL), a component of this graduate degree curriculum.

Fellowship Activities

This Fellows program ran from May 2003 to April 2004. Participants in the program attended a three day place-based orientation plus competed a two-week online workshopthat included informational sessions covering online course planning and technologies appropriate for distance education activities. Followup meetings, sometime including guest faculty from various distance education programs at Duke, were held each month throughout the Fellowship period. Participants in the program received a $1,250 stipend at the completion of the orientation and a second $1,250 stipend in May 2004 contingent on completion of the remaining activities.

Outcomes

Programmatic outcomes included: finalized degree requirements and course credits, final program schedule for 2004-05 and development of a semester template to include residencies in addition to online work, drafted a course model for DEL online courses, and developed program goals. Individual faculty participants also completed a course outline for the DEL course they planned to teach first, which served as a basis for later completion and offering of the course.
