Blackboard Great Ideas Mini-Grant

Duke instructors frequently request information about how their colleagues effectively use Blackboard. CIT can provide generic examples of best practices but would also like to provide real examples of how Duke faculty use this important course tool.
If you use one or more Blackboard tools in a way which works for you and your course, your colleagues would like to know!
- Do you have a great discussion board activity, which never fails to engage students?
- Do you use online practice tests to help students develop their problem-solving skills?
- Do you use Blackboard blogs or wikis to allow students to author materials used by the entire class?
- Do you use the Blackboard gradebook in innovative ways to give students quick feedback on class assignments?
Please email us and tell us about what works for you!
If your Blackboard great idea is selected for publication, we will ask you to work with us to do all or some of the following modeling activities*:
- create a copy of your Blackboard site, with students' information anonymized, to allow other faculty to explore your entire site or part of the site,
- build "guided tours" of the course site using a screen capture tool to record features and create an animated, interactive movie of "highlights,"
- sit for an interview with us, to explain how you use Blackboard and how it works for you.
CIT will provide the staff to create the site copy and the guided tour, and will record and edit the interview video. We will ask you to provide input, explanation, and review the materials before we publicize them.
To compensate you for your time and effort, CIT will provide you with up to a $500 payment deposited to your Duke research account*.
To submit a Great Blackboard Idea, email cit@duke.edu by 5 pm February 6, 2008 with the following:
- Subject: Bb Great Idea submission
- Faculty name
- Email address and phone number
- Bb Course ID (you can get this from the Bb Control Panel display)
- Course title and semester
- Short description of the features or functions used, and why they work well
- Which of the three "modeling activities" you are willing to participate in (course copy, tutorial, and/or interview)
NOTE: you can submit ideas about other faculty members' courses, but we will contact them to ensure they are willing to have their ideas used publically. They will receive the stipend if their ideas are chosen.
All submitted ideas/courses will be reviewed and those selected for publication will be announced by March 7, 2008.
*Payment of $500 to Duke research account for participation in all three modeling activities (anonymized course creation, tutorial creation, faculty interview); reduced stipend paid for participating in only 1 or 2 of the activities.
