 Service or program spotlight

Teaching Triangles: Peer Observation & Feedback
http://cit.duke.edu/help/events/teaching.do
This program is for graduate students who will be teaching a course or leading a section as a TA this summer. Participants form multi-disciplinary triads to observe each others’ teaching and interaction in their classrooms, reflect on the observation experience, and share these reflections with their partners and other participants in the workshop.  Participation in this workshop includes guidance in giving and receiving constructive feedback on teaching, and allows you to formulate a plan for enhancing your own teaching. Orientation is May 13 for session 1 and August 8 for session 2. Register at the link above.

 Teaching resources of the month

Search TRLN: Unified library catalog for Duke, UNC, NCSU and NCCU
http://search.trln.org/
TRLN (the Triangle Research Libraries Network) has launched a new catalog that has a unified search for the collections of all the schools’ libraries. You can request delivery between the schools, which is expected to take 48 hours. Search TRLN has a number of exciting new features: browse by call number, look at books recently added to the collections, limit to types of libraries (i.e., law only), refine your search by format, subject, etc.  And it still has the support you’re used to: Ask a Librarian and live chat help. Give it a try and let the library know what you think!

Duke East Asia Nexus (DEAN)
http://www.dukenexus.org
The Duke East Asia Nexus (DEAN) is a student-run, online academic journal. This website publishes editorial articles submitted by Duke students and faculty on political, economic, and cultural issues of East Asia. In the near future, DEAN will also feature writers from Duke's peer institutions in America and East Asia. Capitalizing on the benefits of the Internet, DEAN is also an international forum for students across the world to critically engage with these articles through comments and debate.

New and cool

Presentations on Web 2.0 and learning
http://tinyurl.com/2cjxrf
The Educause Learning Initiative's annual conference in late January 2008 was the venue for a collection of thought-provoking and insightful presentations, including a number of sessions on Web 2.0 technologies and their impact on teaching and learning. Henry Jenkins gave a thoughtful, idea-filled talk about Wikipedia and new media literacy.  Marcia Lovett's presentation "Teaching Metacognition" gave some great ideas for helping students learn critical thinking.  For a riveting glimpse into the future, look at Michael Wesch's discussion of "Human Futures for Technology and Education." Explore links to 11 presentations at the page above.

Project profile

Digital Durham site expands with Google Earth and new technologies
http://digitaldurham.duke.edu/
Trudi Abel (History) continues to expand the Digital Durham project/website through a collaboration between Duke students and Durham high-school students. By matching archival data and maps with GPS data and digital photos, students use Google Earth to integrate several historical maps of Durham into a set of Google Earth files that will increase the integration of real-world research into her courses.  Abel also plans to use new online video annotation tools like Voicethread to provide an easy way for her students to engage with Durham history through new digital storytelling activities.

Blackboard Tip of the Month

“Edit View” link, a shortcut to edit course content
http://blackboard.duke.edu
The “Edit View” link in the upper right hand corner of the main Blackboard course display frame allows instructors to edit-in-place rather than go through the Control Panel to make changes to content.   Instructors may use "Edit View" and "Display View" to easily toggle back and forth between the two views of course content.

To explore and discover additional Blackboard features, see the Blackboard support website at the link above. If you need a Blackboard tutorial, request an Office Visit and we will come to you.
