Fellows 2006 - Using Video in Courses - School of Law

Overview

In 2006, the clinics faculty of the School of Law participated in a CIT Fellows program to explore integration of video technology into the teaching of client interviewing and counseling skills. Specifically, the faculty wished to learn about efficiently using video to record student-client encounters, and develop processes for evaluating student performance and deciding when to use video recording in the Clinics.

Fellowship activities

This Fellows program ran from January - December 2006. Fellows attended a one-day orientation that included guest speakers from Duke who discussed their experiences using video in classes, as well as talks by a Brigham Young University faculty member who uses video for self assessment in Law Clinics at BYU. Followup meetings were held approximately monthly, at which CIT consultants demonstrated DVD authoring and other technologies and helped the Fellows develop rubrics and evaluation instruments for their programs. Fellows received a $1,250 stipend for completing the orientation activities and a second $1,250 stipend in December 2006 after completing the remaining Fellows activities.

Outcomes

The Fellows developed permission forms for clients who would be recorded during interviews, and client interview and counseling rubrics. The faculty, in cooperation with local staff, also created three demonstration videos used in training, and a survey instrument to allow students to rate their skill development during their clinic semester. The faculty refined ideas on selectively using video technology in student feedback and, after the Fellows term, are continuing dialogue with CIT consultants on these issues.
