Program purpose is to encourage interaction between Duke faculty and faculty from other institutions about new technologies for teaching.

Purpose:
To encourage faculty and departments to plan and host events and speakers at Duke related to pedagogy and instructional technology.
Available to:
Full time Duke faculty
Grant resources (what can the grant provide?):
- Travel and lodging for up to 2 nights ($1,000 maximum)
- Use of CIT’s event management system to track registrations for events, if provided with event information.
- Advertising of event(s) on CIT’s email list, when provided with event information
- Advice on appropriate methods to evaluate guest presentation(s), provision of evaluation report template.
Grant requirements:
- At least one presentation/workshop by guest must be open to the entire Duke community
- All sessions presented must be evaluated, and brief evaluation report provided to CIT
- Access to a Duke account to which the grant funding can be deposited
- Access to a means to charge expenses to that account (Duke P-card or other method)
- Participation in grant project evaluation and communication activities
Application deadlines:
Applications can be submitted anytime, but will be reviewed beginning at the start of each month. Application reviews can take up to 4 working weeks.
Award:
- Maximum monetary award is $1,000.
- CIT consulting is typically 2 hours or less
Other notes:
- Faculty or department should be prepared to handle event logistics, including room and equipment reservations, catering (if necessary), other advertising or event invitations, management of guest travel and lodging, setting up and analysis of event evaluations, etc.
- Faculty may receive only one CIT Jump Start or Invited Speaker Grant, per academic year (July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010).
- Receipt of a mini-grant award over $500 will preclude receipt of other major CIT awards in that academic year (Fellows programs, CIT grants), and vice versa.
- Faculty or department will need to pay up-front for the speaker expenses and provide original receipts to CIT for reimbursement within 4 weeks after completion of the travel or by June 15, 2010 (whichever is earlier).
- Funds provided via this grant are deposited into a Duke account, not paid directly to a faculty member.
Evaluation of applications:
Grant applications will be judged based on relevance of the speaker to the proposed topic, the types of planned sessions, and the outcomes described.
