Labs & Equipment
New in the CIT Labs
These applications have been recently installed:
- Adobe Captivate 4 (IT Lab)
- Camtasia Studio 6 (IT Lab)
- iLife '09 (All Labs)
The audio room has been relocated to a sound booth located at 031 Bostock (inside the IT Suite, 030 Bostock).
All three labs have new Epson scanners which are much easier to use. The East Language Lab previously had no scanner.
The cassette decks have been removed from the East Language Lab, giving users more desk space.
The Instructional Technology Lab may be used by faculty, academic support and library staff to create digital and multimedia materials for use in teaching. The Language Labs are available for drop-in use and for class sessions when reserved in advance.
Lab Locations
The IT Lab is located in room 024 on the lower level of the Bostock Library. From the first floor of Bostock, go down the stairs or take the elevator down one floor to the lower level. The lab is inside the IT Suite across from the stairwell, inside the door numbered 026. From the IT Suite foyer, the lab is inside the first door on the left.
The East Campus Language Lab is located in 101 Carr. The West Campus Language Lab is located in 114 Languages.

- convert paper documents to electronic form
- capture and edit audio or video
- record a short screen movie
- use lynda.com tutorials to master a particular software package
- prepare materials for distribution from Duke's streaming servers
- get basic instruction in the use of Duke Digital Initiative equipment
- produce CDs and DVDs of audio and video material that can be used for delivery of course materials, projection in a classroom or backup purposes
Request a Reservation in the IT Lab
You may reserve lab equipment and workstations during normal weekday business hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please make reservation requests at least one day in advance using our reservation request form to ensure that equipment and staff are available.
Please include in your request a brief description of the project you have in mind. If you have never worked in the IT Lab before, we may ask you to set up an initial consultation with a CIT staff member prior to beginning your project, depending upon the nature of your project.
If we are not able to accommodate your request, we will suggest other campus or community resources where appropriate.
IT Lab Policies
- The CIT Lab equipment is available for faculty, teaching and library staff to use in the creation of teaching materials. Other uses are not allowed.
- Requests for appointments should be made at least one business day in advance.
- All lab users are required to submit a reservation request for the workstation they wish to use. This can be done in advance to ensure the availability of the workstation, but this must also be done for "drop-in" visits. This helps us track usage of the lab.
- Lab users should shut down and turn off any equipment when they are finished using it.
- The workstations in the lab are intended for production and training work and not for file storage. Users are responsible for backing up and maintaining their data on their own portable storage devices or in Webfiles.
- For large or long term projects, we can assign an external hard drive for a semester at a time. These hard drives should not be taken out of the lab, however, unless the user has been given special permission to do so by a CIT staff member.
- Food and beverages should be kept away from the equipment.
- Lab users are responsible for adhering to all copyright and privacy laws and guidelines. It is the responsibility of the lab user to obtain any necessary copyright permissions or release forms. The Scholarly Communications Office at Duke is available to assist faculty and teaching staff with these issues.
