CIT can assist faculty by creating certain materials for teaching through our Materials Development Support Program, or instructors can see our project planning guides for some suggestions if they are creating their own materials.

Materials Development Support Program

This program is designed to support the digitization of course materials such as audio, video or images. CIT provides project planning assistance for the project and (depending on the scope of the project) may complete the digitization or may develop the initial "proof of concept" digital course materials, with feedback from the applicant. After the "proof of concept" materials have been approved, CIT may provide further production assistance, or may provide training and access to equipment to enable the applicant to complete the project with minimal assistance. In all cases, CIT provides guidance on integrating digital course materials with campus instructional technology tools.

Note: All materials development requests are subject to a copyright review.

Who can request support

Full time Duke faculty and instructors

Support provided to approved projects

Program requirements

Each application will undergo a review process, which may take up to one business week. During this phase, the faculty member will be asked to:

If the request is approved, the faculty member will be expected to do the following during the materials production or "proof of concept" process:

Application deadlines

Applications can be submitted anytime, and will be reviewed on a rolling basis; application reviews can take up to 1 business week. If a request is accepted, work will be scheduled depending on our existing production calendar and CIT student worker availability. CIT can not guarantee a particular start time for materials production work, but in general, the longer the lead-time on applications, the better.

NOTE: Materials Development projects are not completed on a drop-off basis. Applicants MUST complete a request form and should expect at least a one business week turn around on their request.

Award

This program does not provide a monetary award. CIT provides project management and technical expertise as well as student worker time necessary to complete materials development projects.

Evaluation of applications

Applications will be reviewed based on feasibility, compliance with copyright guidelines, fit with established Duke best practices for production and use of digital course materials, potential pedagogical impact, fit with department and university strategic goals, fit with CIT resources and availability, scalability, and other factors.
