| Title: |
Personal
Response Systems |
| Description: |
Demonstration
of how faculty can use Personal Response Systems in large lecture
halls to change the dynamics of the class. Demonstration focuses on
use of polling techniques for creating a more active learning environment
in small and large classrooms. When students are given response feedback
immediately following the presentation of a
question by the instructor, they are much more interested in further
discussion on the topic. In addition, 'peer instruction' techniques
can be used to have students work together to conceptual models of
core principles. |

Geospatial
Technologies in the classroom, in the field and on the Web |
| Description: |
Geospatial
Technologies (Geographic Information Systems [GIS], satellite remote
sensing, field surveying and Global Positioning Systems [GPS]) are
a suite of technologies that support fundamental analyses across the
majority of environmental management and earth science disciplines.
At the Nicholas School we have a rapidly growing demand for instruction
in geospatial technologies for undergraduate, professional and doctoral
level curricula, as well as a need to support new disciplinary research
conducted using these technologies. We will demonstrate applications
of geospatial technologies on workstations in a computing lab, with
field based GIS using PDAs and GPS systems and shared digital
data libraries using Internet Map Server Technologies (IMS). |
