Overview
What Is It?
Lectopia is an automated lecture capturing application that captures, converts and publishes audio, VGA and video components of a lecture in streaming, podcast and/or download formats. The Lectopia system, developed and designed by the University of Western Australia, allows users to automate the scheduling, capturing and publishing of classroom lectures through a software and hardware configuration.
One of the great benefits of Lectopia is that it is web based and allows the end users to access the media in multiple output formats, via streaming, downloading and podcasting. The system may be set to record every lecture or a one time recording. It also allows the administration of the program to set the publish dates of the captured lectures to a specified date.
Who Uses It?
Lectopia is used by instructors, departments and student groups to publish and share course or event content with an audience over the internet. Lectopia is great for distance learning because it allows the end user to determine what type of media output best fits his or her needs.
How Does It Work?
The Lectopia system coordinates recordings (capture) by establishing each course or event as a “unit”. The administrator of the system then sets scheduling and publishing (output formats) for the unit. The types of media formats published depends on the particular recording capabilities of the venue first, and the selected output formats second. After the unit is created, the schedule recording of the event is set. Lectopia may be started manually or it may be set to automatically start by time of day and day of the week. It may also be set to automatically record recurring courses and or events. The output formats are then selected.
Once the recording finishes, the file is uploaded to the Lectopia server where it is converted into the multiple formats. After the conversion process it publishes a URL to the Lectopia Unit. The end user loads the URL into a web browser and thus has access to all the recordings of that unit.
Lectopia may also be used as a web based system for presenting previously captured materials to an audience. Audio, PowerPoint, video, and VGA files may be uploaded to Lectopia and converted into multiple formats for publishing.
